The Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) plays an essential role in the underwriting process for homeowners insurance companies. Class 1 is the highest possible PPC awarded to a fire department from the ISO and is among the best in the nation. Only the top 0.01% of all fire departments have received this rating out of nearly 40,000 agencies that went through the rigorous testing and reporting process.
During FY 2022, the ISO completed its analysis of the structural fire suppression delivery system of PBCFR. The rigorous process has resulted in PBCFR proudly joining the nation's elite group of fire rescue departments with its new Class 1 PPC rating.
Residents and businesses within the unincorporated areas and municipalities served by PBCFR can enjoy more safety and peace of mind knowing they have the best fire and life safety protection available. Class 1 rated areas typically offer lower insurance premiums for residents and businesses.
The ISO rates fire departments from 1-10 based on their ability to “respond to and prevent fires" with 1 being the best rating. The Class 1 rating applies to properties located within five road miles of a fire station.
Elements used to determine the PPC rating:
- 50% - Overall Fire Department (training hours, equipment, staffing, station location, and deployment time)
- 40% - Water Supply Systems & Fire Flows (hydrants and alternative water source operations)
- 10% - Emergency Communications Systems (911 Dispatch)
- Extra 5.5% - Community Risk Reduction (fire prevention and code enforcement, fire safety education, and fire investigation programs)
- On August 30th, 2022, a representative from the ISO attended the Board of County Commissioner's meeting to present the Class 1 plaque. The Class 1 PPC rating took effect on November 1st, 2022, an accomplishment demonstrating a true testament to PBCFR's Vision of Excellence Today, Improving Tomorrow.
