To become an ocean lifeguard the tryouts are in two stages. After completing and passing Stage 1, an applicant will be given an invitation to participate in Stage 2. After completing and passing Stage 2, you will be ranked on our eligibility list for positions that may open within six months. If a position opens and you are one of the selected candidates, Human Resources will contact you to schedule a pre-employment physical and an orientation.
Note: An applicant can choose any tryout date regardless of location.
Stage 1:
Swim Test. 500 meter pool swim in less than 10 minutes.

Come to 500 meter swim test with:
- Copy of Driver license
- Copy of ARC Lifeguarding certification
- Copy of AHA or ARC Professional rescuer CPR/AED certification.
- Download and complete job application
- Bathing suit, goggles, towel
- Optional: Copy of EMT or First Responder card
Stage 2:
Beach Test. Consists of:
- A Run/Swim/Run continuously for approximately 20-25 minutes.
- Perform both a conscious and unconscious rescue with an assist/carry out of the water.
- CPR skills check.
- An oral interview on scheduling availability.
