Palm Tran is holding its fourth “Train the Travel Trainer” workshop today (Wednesday) until 3:30 p.m. at Palm Tran’s administrative offices, 3201 Electronics Way, West Palm Beach.
Specialized instruction by Palm Tran staff is being provided to high school teachers in the Palm Beach County School District who teach alternate assessment students. The teachers then teach their students how to ride the bus.
This program, developed through a curriculum from Easter Seals Project ACTION (ESPA), focuses on the needs of the educable and trainable mentally handicapped students who are participating in the community-based instruction and vocational education programs within the school district.
Currently, there are more than 500 students enrolled in 28 high and alternative schools who have been identified as needing life-long transportation. These students will never be able to drive a car. Therefore, this program will contribute to their needs for life skills training to facilitate their independence and mobility.
The Train the Travel Trainer program is made possible in part by a partnership with the Palm Beach County School District and a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. For more information, please call RoseAnn LaBella-Voils at 561-841-4343.
