On October 7, 2010, Commissioner Abrams visited the Food Center at Boca Helping Hands to observe their five-days-a-week daily operation of providing a hot lunch to approximately 135 poor, needy, homeless men and women and children. Boca Helping Hands has been very successful in meeting the needs of people in the community. They have expanded their program by adding an Assistance Center to help people who face crisis situations such as evictions and utility cancellations. In addition, they now have a Mentoring Center that provides coaching and guidance to help individuals re-enter the community and break the cycle of dependence.
According to Executive Director James Gavrilos, the center has seen an increased demand for services due to the present state of the economy. Nate Nichols from the Children’s Services Council also participated and emphasized the need to use Boca Helping Hands as a successful template for a food distribution center to serve Palm Beach County residents.
