Commissioner Abrams to Host Opening Event for Pondhawk Public-Use Facilities Sept. 13

Reporters and photographers are invited to join Palm Beach County and its partners for the opening event of the county’s 79-acre Pondhawk Natural Area on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 9 a.m.

District 4 Commissioner Steven L. Abrams will host the event which will showcase the recently completed wetland restoration and public-use facilities at the natural area. There will be a short ceremony followed by a guided tour led by Department of Environmental Resources Management staff.

New public-use facilities include:

  • half-mile accessible loop trail and wildlife observation platform
  • quarter-mile natural-surface hiking trail
  • quarter-mile multiuse (hiking and cycling) trail around Blue Lake adjacent to the Spanish River Library
  • bicycle rack
  • informational kiosk

Funding partners include Palm Beach County, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection/Florida Communities Trust program, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the City of Boca Raton.

What: opening of Pondhawk Natural Area public-use facilities
When: September 13 at 9 a.m.
Where: Parking will be at the Spanish River Library located at 1501 NW Spanish River Boulevard, Boca Raton. 
Directions: From I-95, exit at Yamato Road and go west to Military Trail. Go south on Military Trail to Spanish River Boulevard and turn left.  The library parking lot is about a half mile east on the left. Park on the west side of the parking lot next to the natural area.  Note:  There is a five-minute walk from the parking lot to the public-use facilities.
  • This event is free and open to the public.
  • Casual attire and comfortable shoes are suggested. 
  • Restrooms are available at Spanish River Library.
