ERM Volunteer Opportunities in September

The Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM) has three weekday volunteer events and three weekend volunteer events planned for September. These projects are designed for volunteers ages 16 and older. Volunteers 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers can register for an event by calling Ann Mathews at 561-233-2426 or emailing amathews@pbcgov.org. Thanks for helping ERM keep Palm Beach County clean and green.

VOLUNTEER EVENT  (WEEKDAY EVENT)
What: Removing trash and invasive plants
Where: Yamato Scrub Natural Area – 701 Clint Moore Rd. in Boca Raton

When: Thursday, September 6
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  
Directions: From I-95 exit at Congress Ave. - head south on Congress Ave. to Clint Moore Road - turn left and head east on Clint Moore Road for roughly one-half mile. The natural area entrance is located on the north side of Clint Moore Road. Volunteers will need to make a U-turn on Clint Moore Road (at the Boca Raton Shrine Club) to access the natural area parking lot. We will meet in the parking lot and then proceed to the project work area. Volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes as we will be working in scrub habitat. Hats and sunscreen are recommended as there is little to no shade. Restroom facilities (Port-a-lets) are available in the parking lot. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments for the volunteers. Event participation is limited to the first 12 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT
What: Removing trash and invasive plants
Where: Pondhawk Natural Area – Boca Raton

When: Saturday, September 8
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Directions: From I-95 exit at Yamato Road - head west on Yamato Road to Military Trail - turn left and head south on Military Trail to Spanish River Boulevard – turn left and head east on Spanish River Boulevard for roughly one-half mile. Turn left into the parking lot of the Boca Raton Spanish River Library (1501 NW Spanish River Blvd.) and look for a white county truck to locate the volunteer meeting area. This will be on the far west side of the parking lot to keep the parking spaces closer to the library entrance open for the library patrons. Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, sneakers or hiking boots.  We will be moving through saw palmetto so be prepared for some “crashing and bashing” through the woods. Restroom facilities are available inside the library. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT
What:  Trash removal  International Coastal Cleanup Event
Where: Limestone Creek Natural Area – 6570 Church St. - Jupiter

When: Saturday, September 15
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  
Directions: From I-95 exit at Indiantown Road (SR 706) – head east on Indiantown Road to Central Blvd. – turn left and head north on Central Blvd. to Church Street – turn left and head west on Church Street. The natural area is located on the south side of Church Street. You don’t have to drive far to reach the entrance, the natural area borders Central Blvd. and Church Street. Volunteers should wear old shoes and clothing for this event as we will be working in brush-filled and possibly muddy areas. There are no restroom facilities available at the site. Restrooms are available in various convenience stores and fast-food restaurants along Indiantown Road. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register.
SPECIAL NOTE: We are not the only organization participating in this event. There are numerous sites throughout Palm Beach County holding cleanups on the same date. Please go to the Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful website (www.keeppbcbeautiful.org) for information on other cleanup sites. Please register with the contact person listed under the site you are interested in. (ERM is responsible only for the Limestone Creek cleanup location.)

VOLUNTEER EVENT  (WEEKDAY EVENT)
What: Exotic plant removal and trash removal
Where: Rosemary Scrub Natural Area – 2901 N. Seacrest Blvd. -  Boynton Beach

When: Thursday, September 20
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Directions: From I-95 exit at Hypoluxo Road - head east on Hypoluxo Road to Seacrest Blvd. - turn right and head south on Seacrest Blvd. for roughly one mile. The natural area is located on the right (west side) of Seacrest Blvd. just south of a small convenience store. Volunteers should wear long pants, T-shirts, sneakers or hiking boots. Volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes as we will be working in brush-filled areas. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments for the volunteers. Due to small parking facilities, event participation is limited to the first 12 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT  (WEEKDAY EVENT)
What: Trash removal    
Where: Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area – 150 Hypoluxo Road – Hypoluxo

When: Thursday, September 27
Time: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  
Directions: From I-95 exit at Hypoluxo Road – head east on Hypoluxo Road for roughly one mile. The natural area is located on the south side of Hypoluxo Road between Overlook Road and U.S. Highway 1. Look for the two large wooden observation towers to locate the parking lot. Volunteers should wear long pants, T-shirts, boots or sneakers. We will be working in brush-filled areas, so volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at various stores located across the street from the natural area. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments for the volunteers. Volunteers will be working in open areas, so be prepared for the sun and heat. Event participation is limited to the first 12 volunteers who register

VOLUNTEER EVENT National Public Lands Day Event
What: Removing trash from wooded areas of scrub
Where: Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (JILONA) – Jupiter

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Directions: From I-95 exit at Indiantown Rd. (SR  706) – head east on Indiantown Rd. to U.S. Highway 1 – turn left and head north on U.S. Highway 1 to Beach Rd (707) – turn right on Beach Rd. and park in Lighthouse Park (500 Captain Armours Way). Volunteers will then walk east on Beach Road for roughly one-eighth mile to the natural area entrance which is located on the north side of Beach Road. Look for a white county vehicle to locate the volunteer meeting area. Volunteers should wear long pants, T-shirts, sneakers or hiking boots. Volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes as we will be working in dirty and muddy areas. Much of the trash is buried in saw palmetto -- be prepared for some serious “crashing and bashing” through the woods. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area, but are available at Lighthouse Park. ERM will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments for the volunteers. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register.
