The Lord's Place Helps Hundreds of Homeless Each YearCommissioner Abrams recently had an opportunity to meet with administrators at the West Palm Beach Lord’s Place, a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to homelessness that provides innovative and effective services to men, women and children in our community. This well-respected local agency has been providing an array of services to the homeless and poor for over 30 years and has successfully helped thousands of people. For example, in 2010, they provided supportive housing for nearly 500 homeless men, women and children. By the end of the year, 83% of those served were no longer homeless and 58% were living independent, self-sufficient lives. Consider this: Hundreds of families with children are homeless in Palm Beach County; 42% are children under 6, and more than 2,000 homeless students are enrolled in the local school system. Many veterans make up a significant portion of the homeless population, and many women become homeless as a result of fleeing domestic violence.
