Commissioner Abrams, along with local officials and managers from the county's Environmental Resources Management Department, officially opened the new South Lake Worth Inlet Sand Transfer Plant on June 16, 2011.
The facility, originally built in 1927, was the first, fixed-sand transfer plant in the world. The primary function of the plant is to move the sand from the north side of the inlet to the sand-starved beaches to the south. The project also included renovating the north and south jetties, and installing a new seawall on Bird Island.
In addition to a ribbon-cutting ceremony, officials and visitors were provided a tour of the facility and other areas in the vicinity that are part of the county's comprehensive coastal management strategy.
The new South Lake Worth Sand Transfer Plant is located at 7020 North Ocean Boulevard/A1A in Ocean Ridge.
