On May 25, Commissioner Abrams hosted a tour and information session at the county’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for local municipal officials and members of the Commissioner’s Citizens Advisory Group from his district. The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for the group to meet with the county’s emergency officials, tour the facility and obtain a briefing of the county’s emergency plans for full-scale hurricane activation.
“This state-of-the-art center is one of the most important facilities in the county and is vital in assisting the public under extreme emergency conditions such as a hurricane,” said Abrams.
“Having led local response efforts to three hurricanes in 14 months as a mayor, I know how critical the EOC is,” he added.
Strategic coordination is a major function of emergency officials at the EOC. Once activated, local officials monitor and advise the public on critical information such as up-to-date storm tracking information, shelter openings and locations, water supply warnings, food and water distribution locations, and so much more.
The coordination effort is substantial and includes members of more than 100 responding agencies such as law enforcement, fire rescue, Red Cross, FEMA and Florida Power and Light.
The tour included the operations room, broadcast studio, emergency information center and the media room.
