ERM Volunteer Events for March

The Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management has three week day volunteer events and two weekend volunteer events planned for late February and March. The projects are designed for volunteers ages 16 and older. Volunteers 15 and under must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Volunteers can register for an event by either calling me at 561-233-2426 or emailing me at amathews@pbcgov.org. Thanks for helping the Department keep Palm Beach County clean and green.

VOLUNTEER EVENT    (WEEKDAY EVENT)
What:  Removing Trash
Where:  Lantana Scrub Natural Area  – adjacent to the Lantana Lake Worth Health Center – 1250 Southwinds Drive - Lantana
When:  Thursday, February 28, 2013
Time:  9 a.m. to noon
Directions:  From I-95 exit at Lantana Road – head east on Lantana Road to Andrew Redding Road (second traffic light past I-95) – turn left and head north on Andrew Redding Road to Southwinds Drive – turn right and head east on Southwinds Drive – drive to the end of the road – look for a white County truck to locate parking area and volunteer meeting area.

Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, boots or sneakers. We will be working in areas with saw palmetto and cactus – so long pants and long-sleeved shirts are recommended. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. The Department will supply all tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 15 volunteers who register.

What:  Removing Trash, Removing Invasive Plants, Mulching (pine needles)
Where: Seacrest Scrub Natural Area – 3400 S. Seacrest Blvd. - Boynton Beach

When: Thursday, March 21, 2013
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Directions: From I-95 exit at Woolbright Road – head east on Woolbright Road to Seacrest Blvd. – turn right and head south on Seacrest Blvd. for roughly 2 miles – the natural area is located on the east side of Seacrest Blvd. (just south of the hospital) – look for a brown sign at the parking lot entrance.

Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, boots or sneakers. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at Bethesda Hospital on Seacrest Blvd. We will be working in brush-filled areas so volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes. The Department will supply all tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 15 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT
What: Trash removal, Invasive plant removal
Where: Frenchman’s Forest Natural Area – 12201 Prosperity Farms Rd. - Palm Beach Gardens

When: Saturday, March 23, 2013
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Directions: From I-95 exit at PGA Blvd. – head east on PGA Blvd. to Prosperity Farms Road – turn left and head north on Prosperity Farms Road for roughly 1 mile – the natural area entrance is located on the west side of Prosperity Farms Road (just north of Cross Community Church) – turn into the parking lot and look for a white county truck to locate volunteer staging area.

Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, hiking boots or sneakers. We will be “crashing and bashing” through saw palmetto so volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes they don’t mind getting dirty. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at various stores located along PGA Blvd. The Department will supply all tools, gloves, and refreshments. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register.

VOLUNTEER EVENT  
What: Trash removal
Where: Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area – 150 Hypoluxo Road – Hypoluxo

When: Saturday, March 30, 2013
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Directions: From I-95 exit at Hypoluxo Road – head east on Hypoluxo Road for roughly 1 mile – the natural area is located on the south side of Hypoluxo Road between Overlook Road and U.S. Highway 1 – look for the two large wooden observation towers to locate the parking lot.

Volunteers should wear long pants, t-shirts, boots or sneakers. We will be working in brush-filled areas – so volunteers should wear clothing they don’t mind getting dirty. Restroom facilities are not available at the natural area. Restrooms are available at various stores located across the street from the natural area. The Department will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments.  Volunteers will be working in open areas so be prepared for the sun and heat. Event participation is limited to the first 24 volunteers who register
