The Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management is overseeing a $1.45 million maintenance dredging project inside the South Lake Worth Inlet (also known as the Boynton Inlet). Center Marine Contracting, LLC will dredge beach-compatible sand from the inlet sand trap, Intracoastal Waterway and access channel to Boynton Boat Club Park (also known as Harvey Oyer Park) via a submerged pipeline to the beach off Ocean Ridge Hammock Park. Large rock produced while deepening the trap will be placed in an existing artificial reef site near the sand trap. Fine sand and smaller rock will be barged to a deep hole inside the Lake Worth Lagoon.
Funding sources include the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Inland Navigation District, the City of Boynton Beach and Palm Beach County. The project will be closely monitored to avoid impacts to local resources, including nearshore reefs, sea grasses, sea turtles and shorebirds.
