Project Location
Bicentennial Park is located on Ocean Avenue within the Town of Lantana and adjacent to the Lake Worth Lagoon.
The Problem
A dramatic loss of mangrove species due to increase in urban development of natural shoreline over time.
The Solution
Create mangrove habitat along existing seawall.
Project Overview
-
Removed base rock from the site and smoothed out the area
-
Placed eight mangrove planters along the existing seawall.
-
Constructed mangrove planters at a set elevation allowing water to flush mangrove roots.
-
Lined each planter with filter cloth and filled them with a planting substrate to encourage plant growth.
-
Planted about 80 mangrove seedlings.
Placed limestone rock near the planters to function as wave break to protect the growing mangrove seedlings.
-
Constructed an educational kiosk within Bicentennial Park providing information about Lake Worth Lagoon.
-
Completed in August 2002.
Benefits
-
Provides enhancement of mangrove habitat within Lake Worth Lagoon.
-
Mangroves beautify our shorelines and provide habitat for fish, invertebrates and other wildlife species.
-
Mangrove species help stabilize shoreline sediments.
