At the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Feb. 6, 2024, Commissioner Bernard presented a proclamation declaring February 2024 as Black History Month in Palm Beach County. Celebrations recognizing African Americans began in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. With the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Black History Month became more widely acknowledged, and in 1976, President Gerald Ford declared February as Black History Month. In the nearly 50 years since this declaration, Black History Month has grown to become observed nationally, and internationally, with many programs organized on college and university campuses, and it has become part of the public school curriculum.
