On Aug. 11, 2023, Commissioner Woodward joined the Marine Education Initiative (MEI) staff to tour their facilities. The commissioner commended the organization for sharing the importance of local food stability. In 2007, at the age of 15, Lucas Metropulos started the Fishing for Families in Need program.  In 2019, it was officially renamed the Marine Education Initiative.

MEI’s founders saw a need in Palm Beach County for more immersive environmental education programs. The programs include the Responsible Angling Education Program and Aquaponics Food Security & Education Program.

The mission includes driving conservation through education by empowering students in the community with the knowledge of ocean conservation through hands-on experiences in aquaponics. Simultaneously, the organization aims to contribute to the community by donating fresh produce and fostering a sustainable cycle of learning and giving.
