On May 26, 2023, Commissioner Woodward toured the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), one of the most important facilities in our county. It features a state-of-the-art operations room and is ground zero during emergencies. It can withstand a Category 5 hurricane and has 12-inch walls of solid concrete.

The EOC is activated during emergencies. Depending on the severity, representatives from county departments, FEMA and FPL along with state and local emergency officials are available 24/7 to assist before, during and after emergencies. These key agency representatives have access to high-tech tracking and communication systems that monitor weather, roadways, shelter and evacuation operations and damage assessments. The coordination is substantial and may include members of more than 100 responding agencies.

Officials use an important emergency notification program called AlertPBC to communicate with the public. We urge everyone to sign up for these emergency notifications at alertpbc.com and download the PBC DART app. This app has important information such as storm surge evacuation areas, flood zones, shelter locations and more.

Even though emergency officials are ready, we should all take preparedness seriously.

Supplies run out fast before storms, so please take the time now to make a plan, and obtain supplies for your family, friends and pets. Your safety is a priority, so please do your part and be prepared!
