On May 9, 2023, as part of the Governor’s Hurricane Conference, Commissioner Woodward participated in an exclusive tour featuring the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D Orion (P-3) aircraft at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in West Palm Beach. Aboard “Miss Piggy,” as the plane is referred to by those who fly it, the commissioner spoke with scientists, pilots, and aircrews to learn more about the instruments and equipment used during flight to collect meteorological data.

These courageous “hurricane hunters” fly the aircraft into some of the most dangerous weather conditions to collect data that aids in determining forecasts and making accurate predictions during hurricanes. The data also helps researchers better understand storm processes to improve forecast models.

Commissioner Woodward thanked the crew members for a terrific tour and for helping keep Palm Beach County residents and the Gulf Coast safe.
