On March 27, 2023, Commissioner Woodward toured the Kennedy Bunker and former U.S. Coast Guard station on Peanut Island. With last year’s approval of a 30-year lease agreement with the Port of Palm Beach for $10 a year, the county’s Parks and Recreation Department is in the planning stages of restoring these historical sites which will eventually be open to the public.

The bunker, which was built in 1961, was a top-secret nuclear bomb shelter designed to protect JFK during visits to his family’s Palm Beach estate. Once completed, it will be a noteworthy attraction for our residents and visitors!

Currently, the Parks and Recreation Department manages 104 properties spanning over 8,500 acres including 85 developed regional, district, community, beach and neighborhood parks.
