Active construction is about to start at the Bonefish Cove project site after several months of the contractor completing prep and mobilization at the Peanut Island material management area where the sand to build the islands is coming from.

Starting the week of May 6, 2024, the contractor will be placing yellow turbidity curtains at the northernmost end of the project where they will be forming the first island and then move south once they complete that first island.

Turbidity curtains will be placed around the active work area in order to contain and minimize any turbidity plume resulting from placement of the sand within the turbidity curtains.

After turbidity curtains are in place, sand will be barged in from Peanut Island and positioned to create an intertidal island which will be stabilized with a limestone rock breakwater. Daily turbidity monitoring will take place during any sand placement activities.

Work hours will be 7am to 6pm, Monday through Saturday, as approved by the Town of Palm Beach. Each island will take several months to build with the contractor scheduled to complete construction of all islands and oyster reefs by July 2025.

When completed the islands and oyster reefs will provide critical habitat for threatened shorebirds and protected native mangroves, while below water seagrass and oysters will colonize, improving water quality for fisheries and wildlife.
